When starting deviceMotion updates using -[CMMotionManager startDeviceMotionUpdatesUsingReferenceFrame:CMAttitudeReferenceFrameXTrueNorthZVertical] in polling mode, motionManager.deviceMotion always returns nil. For all other reference frames such as CMAttitudeReferenceFrameXMagneticNorthZVertical it returns valid deviceMotion objects. *UPDATE* It looks like this issue has been resolved in iOS 6 beta 2.
