Mountain Lion Mail Shows Deleted IMAP Messages

Originator:justatheory
Number:rdar://12230142 Date Originated:2012-09-04
Status:Behaves correctly Resolved:Closed
Product:Mail.app Product Version:6.0/1486
Classification:Serious Bug Reproducible:Always

Summary:

If I delete a message in an IMAP folder and later receive a new message in the same thread, the deleted message reappears in the folder.

Steps to Reproduce:

* Connect to an IMAP server (I'm using Pobox Mailstore, which uses Cyrus IMAP)
* Make sure that "View -> Organize by Conversation" is checked.
* Send yourself a test message and wait for it to appear in the Inbox
* Delete it from the Inbox.
* Go into sent messages, select the message, and send it again.
* Wait for the new message to appear in the Inbox

Expected Results:

The second message, when it arrives, should be the only test message in the Inbox.

Actual Results:

Both the new copy of the message and the old copy will appear in the view of the message thread.

Regression:

This behavior did not exist in Mail on Lion.

Notes:

I'm gonna guess that the threading code somehow does not know to ignore purged messages.

A reply from Apple

Apple asked me a few questions and asked for a screen shot. Here is my reply.

  1. Are you viewing messages while in the trash mailbox?

No, I am viewing messages in my INBOX.

  1. Where are your deleted messages being stored? On the server or locally? In the Mail recognized trash mailbox, or a regular blue mailbox called "deleted messages" or something like that?

On the server, in the Mail-recognized trash mailbox. In the advanced settings for my IMAP server, I have both "Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox" and "Store deleted messages on the server" checked.

  1. Please send us a screenshot of a conversation showing a message in trash in the viewing pane.

Oh ho! It does not appear if it's in the trash. It was appearing before because there was still the sent message in my Outbox. When I deleted it from the Sent mailbox, it no longer appeared in my inbox.

HTH,

David

PS: Since posting this report, I have come to think of this as a feature. I kind of like having the complete context of a conversation at a glance, without having to go through other mailboxes or my trash to find out who said what and when. Still, it's a pretty bloody advanced feature, as I think it will confuse folks who think they've put a message into a mailbox only to see it show up in another. The lighter grey color of the message body of messages in other mailboxes is barely noticeable on my 2012 13" MacBook Air. But I am at any rate now rather attached to this feature, though agree that maybe it's best not to show messages from the trash.
