Summary: My mid-2007 MacBook Pro (3,1) will wake from sleep every minute or so, despite the lid being shut, the "Wake for Ethernet network access" option being unchecked, Bluetooth turned off, and NO USB peripherals plugged in. Steps to Reproduce: Get your hands on a trusty old MacBook Pro(3,1) from mid-2007 and get up to speed with Mac OS X 10.8. Plug in the AC adapter. Configure a connection to a local Wifi connection. In System Preferences do the following: (1) Turn off Bluetooth (2) Use the following Energy Saver settings for the power adapter Computer sleep: never Display sleep: 3 minutes Check "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" Uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network access" Uncheck "Start up automatically after a power failure" Now, close the lid to the computer. It should go to sleep normally once the memory has been dumped to the disk. Let the computer remain like this for awhile. Expected Results: I expect that when the lid of the laptop is closed that the computer will go to sleep and remain asleep until I open the lid again. Actual Results: Ever minute or so the computer will wake up. It is very easy to tell when this happens because the superdrive does it's typical mechanical rotation upon wakeup. Regression: I can say with absolute certainty that this was not a problem on any previous version of OS X. This is a new issue that started with the installation of OS X 10.8 on this machine. Previous versions of OS X back to 10.4 (Tiger) did not exhibit this behavior. Notes: Attached, please find the system profile for this laptop. I have also included the wake log as reported by sysctl with the following command: "syslog | grep -i "Wake reason" > wake_log.txt" As the log shows, it appears that the reason the computer is waking up is because of "EHC2" which if I had to guess is one of the network adapters. However, Bluetooth is turned off [according to system preferences] and the Wifi connection should not be triggering a wake up because the "Wake for Ethernet network access" box in not checked in Energy Preferences.

pmset Details
Thanks for the tip ashley. I have updated the bug report with the contents of all active assertions as well as the log reported by pmset.
15-Sep-2012 10:26 PM Jon Stacey: I have attached two new files. pmset_assertions.txt contains the output of the command "pmset -g assertions". The pmset_log.txt file contains the output of the command "pmset -g log". Note in the gap in the log between 9/10/12 and 9/12/12. This is because I did not use the computer at all that day. And yet, notice how the last sleep/wake count at the end of 9/10/12 is 105 times (90 Dark Wake counts) and by the end of 9/12/12 it's an outrageous 1,120 sleep/wakes (62 dark wakes). That would have required me to open and close the lid of the laptop every single minute for more than 18 hours. That start/stop is going to be the death of this mechanical hard drive I have no doubt.

Just an idea: seems some more information is available in 10.8 about why a system might not be sleeping. I read this recently: http://useyourloaf.com/blog/2012/08/09/keeping-mountain-lion-awake.html.
