Status:Duplicate/11984713 Resolved:
Product:iPhone/iPod touch Product Version:iOS 6
Classification:Other Bug Reproducible:Yes

Summary: Deleting a message with a media attachment from the iMessages app doesn't delete the file in the filesystem.

Steps to Reproduce:
Check size of iCloud backup and "Other" on iTunes and note the size.
Send an iMessage with a 2minute video file attached.
Check size of iCloud backup and "Other" on iTunes and not the size.
Delete the message with the video.
Check size of iCloud back and "Other" on iTunes. Size hasn't decreased as expected.

Expected Results: iCloud backup size and "Other" on iTunes decreases by the filesize of the media attachment.

Actual Results: iCloud backup size doesn't decrease, wasting iCloud storage space.

Notes:
I have confirmed that the media isn't deleted by using third party backup recovery software. After removing the media message and backing up to iTunes, I used the software to view the iMessage attachments. The video file I deleted is still there, even though I've deleted the message.

Same here...

Wiped all my devices to release space.

Can someone check if this Bug has been fixed with iOS 6.1, released today? Thanx!

same problem

Apple is cashing in on this by selling more iCloud space. My iCloud backup should've been 0.5GB but was 4.5GB solely due to iMessage attachments. Apple Support was useless, so I wiped my iPad and started over. Problem solved.

Yeah it's a little frustrating. I've just removed a device from backing up (not a vital backup though) to free up space. Got about 700mb unaccounted for at the mo in my iPad backups that I can only narrow down to iMessages. Annoying because I've switched off iMessages on that iPad, and that doesn't seem to have deleted the media.
