UIAppearance customization for navigation bars with prompt: image not stretched but tiled

While

  rdar://13461075 (Need UIBarMetricsWithPrompt appearance customization)

would be the real solution to customize navigation bars with prompt, it seems to be a bug that resizable images with resizingMode UIImageResizingModeStretch used for the standard navigation bar background are not resized but *tiled*.

UIImage *image = [[UIImage imageNamed:@"background"] resizableImageWithCapInsets:UIEdgeInsetsZero resizingMode:UIImageResizingModeStretch];
[[UINavigationBar appearance] setBackgroundImage:image forBarMetrics:UIBarMetricsDefault];

I'd expect the background to be stretched, not tiled.
