First Message Failing in Messages

Originator:sethfri
Number:rdar://14215832 Date Originated:06/20/2013
Status:Duplicate/13670814/Closed Resolved:
Product:OS X Product Version:
Classification: Reproducible:Sometimes

Summary: When sending messages in Messages, Messages will fairly consistently fail to send the first text I send in a batch of messages (i.e. a couple of messages in a row), while sending the following messages perfectly fine. If the batch only consists of 1 message, that message will also fail.

Steps to Reproduce: Send a message.

Expected Results: The message to go through like a normal message should.

Actual Results: The message often does not go through, even though follow-up messages go through perfectly fine.

Regression: Occurs on OS X 10.8.4 running Messages 7.0.1 on MacBookPro6,2

Engineering has requested the following information:

There isn't enough information to diagnose this bug. We need logging from this user. If the user could enable Messages logging and reproduce the issue, that would be great.

Here's the instructions: 1. Open/Install the iMessage mobile config profile for OS X (attached to this email)

  1. Run the following commands in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.logging RegistrationLogging -bool YES defaults write com.apple.logging MadridLogging -bool YES defaults write com.apple.logging MadridEventLogging -bool YES defaults write com.apple.logging MadridLoggingLevel -int 0 sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd APSWriteLogs -bool YES sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd EnableDetailedLogging -bool YES sudo touch /Library/Logs/apsd.log sudo chmod o+r /Library/Logs/apsd.log

  1. Reboot your machine and reproduce the issue in Messages (or killall −9 imagent soagent apsd Messages ; then reproduce the issue)
  2. From the menu bar, select Messages -> Gather Diagnostics...
  3. Attach the log directory from Finder to this report (logs can be found at ~/Library/Logs/CrashReports/Messages)
  4. Supply the Apple ID's/Phone numbers of all parties involved and the approximate time the problem occurred. Please include a screenshot of the affected transcript (feel free block out the text of the messages) with a pointer to which message is out of order. Screenshots of the same conversation on iPhone would also be useful.

Here's the legal text that goes along with this logging: Please note: The iMessage Diagnostics Profile generates files that allow Apple to troubleshoot issues with your device and improve its products and services. Those files may contain your Buddy icon as well personal information such as the name, screen name, phone number, Apple ID, or email address of you or those you have messaged. However, the files will not include the contents of any messages sent or received.

Also, it would be good to know if the issue fixes itself on quit/relaunch of Messages, or after a few minutes

Please provide this information by updating your bug report.

Engineering has requested the following:

Please provide sysdiagnose output when you have this issue.

How to run sysdiagnose:

1) Launch Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) 2) Enter the command text below followed by the Return key on the Terminal command line:

sudo sysdiagnose

3) Enter your admin password when prompted and wait for the all of the sysdiagnose processes to finish. 4) Attach the output file that looks like this: sysdiagnose-date-time.tar.gz that is written into the /var/tmp directory to the bug.

Note: You can specify an optional argument for the process name like "Mail" without the quotes for the specific process you want to capture. When there is no argument, the default is to capture all running process info. Here's an example of the command with an optional argument Mail:

sudo sysdiagnose Mail

An alternative approach uses the following key command rather than using the terminal window:

Press Shift-Control-Option-Command-Period when the issue reproduces, wait for approximately 5 minutes (you can release the keys; you don't need to hold them down for 5 minutes). When sysdiagnose has completed, a Finder window will appear, showing the new sysdiagnose file in /var/tmp. Attach that file to your bug report. Please provide your response or results by updating your bug report.
