problem with sprite kit texture atlas

In some cases, the code
SKSpriteNode *sprite = [SKSpriteNode spriteNodeWithImageNamed:@"img_name"];
does not find the image, if it is included in a texture atlas
(the error in the log is "SKTexture: Error loading image resource").
in such cases, if you add the row 
SKTextureAtlas * atlas = [SKTextureAtlas atlasNamed:@"containg_atlas_name"];
above the fore-mentioned code, the problem disappears.
I was able to reproduce it many times (a sample project is attached).
Not sure of the exact definition of the scenario that causes it.
