Summary:
Downloaded and installed the first Xcode6-Beta on my 2013 13" MacBook Air on Mavericks. Tried to run it, it downloaded bunch of stuff (configured itself?), and made a ding as if it had finished, but the progress indicator never went away. Then various other apps started freezing, including Mail, TweetBot, Chrome, and even Emacs! I ended up having to hold the power button down to force a shutdown.

On restart, Xcode6-Beta fired up again (because it was running on shutdown, right?) and froze. After a minute, other apps started freezing again. I had to force a shutdown again by holding down the power button for 10s. On restart, I quickly quit Xcode6-Beta before it had a chance to lock anything up. Another attempt to run it lead to another round of freezing apps and a forced shutdown.

Really want to play with Swift, so this makes me sad! 😭

Comment from justatheory:

Well I'll be damned. Disabling Access Scanning allowed Xcode6-Beta to launch. Bloody Sophos! Time to evaluate whether I really need it or not, more of a nuisance than anything else (it recently rendered 1Password useless on me).

Thanks for digging into this.

Aside: Radar doesn't like emoticons. They seem to be stripped rout of my messages. So here's an ASCII version instead: :-D

I see an anti-virus scanner crashing. What happens when you disable that?

Here you go. Waited till it was done. Emacs.app, TextMate.app, and the Finder were all frozen, as you can see from the attached screenshot. I tried to force-quit TextMate, then the force quit window froze, too. Rebooted and ran disk utility, and now my disk has errors that Disk Utility cannot fix. So now I'm off to run a backup and then restore. Good times.
