imageWithContentsOfFile not loading @2x Assets

Summary:
When compiled with xcode 6 beta 2 [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:] is not loading @2x images.

Steps to Reproduce:
2 image files, image@2x.jpg and image.jpg and following code:

    UIImage *img = [UIImage imageNamed:@"image.jpg"];
    UIImage *img2 = [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:[[[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath] stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"image.jpg"]];
   

Expected Results:
img and img2 both loading the retina asset

Actual Results:
img2 is not the retina asset

Version:
iOS 8 beta 2

Notes:
this was tested on device and in simulator

Configuration:
iphone 5 model A1429
