Mail will not retrieve email from Gmail

Attempting to connect to Gmail, I get this in the activity window:

Synchronizing with server
Synchronizing "Archive -- Google" ...

Fetching new mail
Comparing message list with the server ...

Updating cache directory
Updating cache directory

Those never complete. It's been running for 24 hours, and they haven't gone away.

I also see a lot of these messages in the Console:

8/23/14 8:37:30.880 PM Mail[797]: Stream 0x608000312f30 is sending an event before being opened
