Mavericks: NFS Home directories + OSX = Not saving preferences

Symptoms:

1. User logs into 10.6 OD (or OpenLDAP)/NFS v3 Automount configured Mac.
2. User tries to set some preferences like changing a default app or adding/subtracting a login item.
3. User logs out. Changes "stick".
4. User decides to reboot. Changes revert.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure a Mac to use OD/NFS (or OpenLDAP).
2. Configure for NFS automount home directories.
3. Try to make a change "stick".

Expected Results:
The expectation is that the user data/changes are retained and operate normally as though a local home directory was in use.

Actual Results:
Changes are reverted after a reboot.
