Audio goes right-channel only after reboot

Summary:
The audio settings change to 100% right-channel only after a reboot.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Plug in external speakers.
2. Reboot.
3. Play some music / Open System Prefs

Expected Results:
The audio settings are the same as they were

Actual Results:
The balance slider is all the way to the effing right, for no explicable reason
