This same illegibility still occurs with macOS Sierra's Preview.app version 9.0 (909).

I opened
ai-chess-deep.pdfwith iOS 10.0.1 using both the Safari and iBooks apps, and the rendering was legible. However, on OS X 10.11.6 (Preview.app version 8.1 (877.7)) the illegibility still persists.
