The character ✓ no longer displays in notification titles

Summary:
My app sometimes uses the checkmark character ✓ in notification titles. Recently these started displaying as a square or missing character mark. I believe this change happened in 10.12.2.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run the attached sample app.
2. Switch to another app quickly.
3. Wait a second or two for the notification to appear.

Expected Results:
A notification should appear with the title "✓ Test"

Actual Results:
The ✓ character displays as a square.
