Apple Watch Does not Unlock MacBook Pro 2016

Summary:
My Apple Watch never unlocks my MacBook Pro 2016. It always shows up, then it spins, then nothing, then I have to login with my email or touchID.

The feature does not work with a 1st gen Apple Watch.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open laptop
2. Wear watch
3. Wait for Apple Watch to unlock

Expected Results:
1. MacBook should unlock

Actual Results:
1. Spinning wheel and it fails silently
2. I have to login with password or touchID
