Safari

Summary:
Drag-and-drop provides a new way to open tabs. It's not perfect.

This radar chain (see also: <rdar://problem/32996994>) centers around a reasonably common action for me while reading on iPad: I open a web-page, such as a link-heavy article, and spawn many many links from the page in tabs. The overall experience has regressed in iOS 11 beta.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a page in Safari with many links
2. Desire to open many links on the page.
3. Hold finger down on link to select "Open In New Tab"

Expected Results:
I must wait for the drag interaction to register and let go of the drop in order to use the accessory menu.

Observed Results:
I am able to open many tabs quickly, like I am on macOS by holding down the command key. The previous iOS behavior was not optimal, but the behavior in iOS 11

Version:
11.0 Beta 2 (15A5304i)

Notes:
This likely extends beyond just the reach of Safari, but it's a major regression there as one of the places with crucial long-press action sheets.

Just spitballing a bit with some options/ideas. I recognize they're like terrible in practice, just want to get the gears turning:
- Leave overall interaction unchanged. Safari can present a pseudo-drop target near the drag target to open a new tab when dropped on.
- Change the overall interaction. Safari can present a pseudo-drop target that opens a menu on hover, not unlike the 3D Touch drag-up addition for associated actions.
- Make the spring-load target for New Tab a lot more obvious (radar to follow).

Configuration:
iPad Pro 10.5”, 1st generation

Works for me! I hope that gets mentioned in the Tips app, or in some settings footer text for Safari. Don't want a great addition like that to get lost.

There’s a new feature on iOS 11 that lets you really quickly open a link in a new tab in Safari (like Command-Clicking a link on macOS). If you tap on a link with two fingers in Safari, this is a shortcut for opening the link in a new tab. Note that it will tap what’s at the center of your two fingers, so if the link is small you can tap one finger on either side of it and it will still work. Does this help overcome the conflicts between long press menus and drag and drop that this bug report is about? Please let us know whether the issue is resolved for you by updating your bug report.
