Here's an excerpt of what I filed to Apple as well on the same issue:

One, you can always put nothing on the second column at all on iOS 10, and users who like it simple can enjoy that aesthetic similarity to Notification Center. Since you provide that useful option already, why would you take it away on iOS 11?

Two, you have so much "wasted" space that you can use to organize widgets in a more powerful way that smaller devices like iPhone can't do. That's what iPad is for: more powerful customization and features over bigger space.

Three, there are legit use cases for two columns. For me, I put "utility" like 2STP, Batteries, on the right, and "content" like Kindle, Photos, Day One, on the left. Now, I have to scroll all the time and it's just not a good user experience, and I will likely use Today View less because of this.

Please do not kill this useful feature that you have already introduced and, I believe, many users are getting used to. Provide the option to opt off second column instead.
